Ciara Makes History as One of the First Descendants of Enslaved Africans Granted Citizenship in Benin
Boss Talk 101 Celebrates a Landmark Moment for Black Heritage, Healing, and Legacy
Cotonou, Benin – 2025 — Global superstar, Grammy Award–winning artist, and philanthropist Ciara has made history by becoming one of the first descendants of enslaved Africans to be granted Beninese citizenship under a groundbreaking new law aimed at reconnecting the African diaspora with their ancestral homeland. The honor was bestowed in a moving ceremony attended by Benin’s President Patrice Talon, Justice Minister Yvon Détchénou, and international dignitaries.

The initiative—passed into law in September 2024—allows descendants of Africans taken during the transatlantic slave trade to reclaim their heritage through verified ancestral ties. Applicants can prove lineage via DNA testing, authenticated family records, or oral testimonies, with the government’s My Afro Origins platform streamlining the process for millions worldwide.

Ciara, joined by her husband, NFL quarterback Russell Wilson, visited Benin’s historic Ouidah region, where she stood before the “Door of No Return” and the “Tree of Forgetfulness”—sites memorializing the millions of lives stolen during the slave trade. Moved by the moment, Ciara described it as “a profound return to what truly matters—family, history, and the roots that ground us all.”
Boss Talk Media’s ARLESHI WHITIKER called this a “full circle moment”:
“This ain’t just a celebrity trip—it’s about Black people worldwide touching the soil their ancestors were stolen from. That’s legacy right there.”
Dr. Ranessa Harding added:
“To see Ciara standing there, taking back what was taken from her people—it’s powerful. This is history in the making.”
Benin’s government hopes the initiative will not only restore identity to descendants but also strengthen cultural, economic, and tourism ties between Africa and its diaspora. Ciara’s citizenship marks a new chapter in bridging centuries of separation with honor, pride, and reconnection.
