🕊 Five Years Later: Mo3’s Legacy Still Rings Through Dallas

Five years ago today, Dallas lost one of its rawest voices. Mo3’s passing on November 11, 2020 left a hole in the city and in Southern hip-hop that has yet to be filled.
Mo3 wasn’t just another rapper from Dallas. I’d like to say he pioneered a genre the internet has come to call “YNRNB”. With a voice laced with soul that usually comes from a background in the church. He represented survival, truth, and showcased the ability to turn struggle into sound. His music still hits because it was real, unfiltered, and raw.
Now, his longtime manager Rainwater has dropped a new posthumous Mo3 track titled “Cake Up” ft. Ralo. This comes a day after dropping the interview with Dj Akademics, hosted at the gravesite of the late rapper. During a past interview with Boss Talk 101, Rain said that he wanted Akademics to see the aftermath of the topics his platform speaks on.
The rapper was shot and killed in broad daylight on I-35 in Dallas, a tragedy that shook the culture and left fans, friends, and family reeling. In the years since, there’s been talk, tension, and plenty of unanswered questioned. Rapper Yella Beezy stands accused of ordering the execution, and is currently awaiting trial in this ongoing case.
Nevertheless, five years later, his presence is still felt through the music, the city, and the movement he sparked, and it doesn’t look like Rain is going to let go of the legacy of MO3 anytime soon.
