For A Lot of People, Gratitude Hits Different After a Hard Year

Thanksgiving always brings the same questions: What are you grateful for? Who are you grateful for?

For some this year, the answers hit different. A lot of people walked into the holidays with heavy hearts, empty chairs at the table, financial pressure, breakups, disappointments, and quiet battles that never made it online.

Yet…there’s something about this season that forces you to pause, breathe, and look at what’s still here.

2025 has been a year of losses for many. Homes disappeared overnight, jobs were loss, relationships revealed their true foundation, friendships faded, and some people finally see the cost of carrying everybody but themselves. Gratitude isn’t soft or cliché this year. It’s survival. It’s choosing not to let what broke you become your whole story.

For single moms, parents doing it solo, and anybody rebuilding from scratch, Thanksgiving wasn’t just a holiday, it was a checkpoint. A moment to be proud of the fact that you made it through the things that were supposed to take you out. A moment to realize you didn’t fold. You adjusted.

This is also the season where people start comparing their lives to the perfect family photos online, not realizing half the room is sitting in tension and the other half is praying nobody brings up real issues. Gratitude this year means finding peace in your own lane, not performing for the timeline.

As the year closes, here’s  a reminder:

You still have time to turn a painful year into a powerful one.

If your Thanksgiving wasn’t picture-perfect, it’s okay. A lot of folks in the city felt the same. Gratitude isn’t seasonal anymore. It’s survival. The world is full of people who are healing, rebuilding, and writing a comeback story in real time.

At the end of the day, no matter what happened this year, it didn’t stop you.

That alone is enough to be thankful for.
