GLADYS KNIGHT HEADLINES THE 9TH ANNUAL RIVERFRONT JAZZ FESTIVAL

Dallas is welcoming royalty as Gladys Knight headlines the 9th Annual Riverfront Jazz Festival at Fair Park.
Universally celebrated as the “Empress of Soul,” the 82-year-old legend brings more than seven decades of history, influence and timeless music to one of the city’s biggest cultural celebrations. Her appearance carries additional meaning after Knight recently announced that she will begin performing less frequently while transitioning into the next chapter of her career and life.
Her appearance also follows reports raising concerns about possible dementia. However, her husband and manager, William McDowell, said Knight has not been diagnosed with the condition and would be medically evaluated. Despite the speculation surrounding her health, Knight continues to hit the stage and share the voice that has inspired generations. According to McDowell, performing remains close to her heart because “all she wants to do is sing.”
For longtime fans, this is more than another concert—it is an opportunity to witness a living piece of American music history.
Knight’s remarkable journey began when she won Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour at only seven years old. She later formed a family group that became Gladys Knight & the Pips, building a signature sound rooted in gospel, soul and rhythm and blues.
After signing with Motown Records, the group delivered memorable records such as “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” Their move to Buddah Records produced the Grammy-winning classic “Midnight Train to Georgia,” a song that remains one of the most recognizable recordings in soul-music history.

Knight’s career has survived changing musical eras, shifting audiences and an industry that constantly searches for something new. Her longevity represents more than staying power—it reflects discipline, spiritual grounding and a genuine connection with generations of listeners.
Now, as she begins reducing her touring schedule, every performance becomes even more significant. Knight is not completely walking away from the stage, but she has expressed a desire to spend more time with her husband, grandchildren and other personal projects after approximately 75 years in entertainment.
The Riverfront Jazz Festival gives Dallas an opportunity to celebrate that legacy while Knight is still sharing her gift with audiences.
