Next to You, Next to Me: Why Erykah Badu’s Latest Drop Feels Personal

It’s been a minute since we got a new track from Erykah Badu—but when the high priestess of soul decides to speak, you listen. Today, she dropped more than just a song—she dropped a signal.

Her latest single, “Next to You,” is a silky, soulful link-up with producer The Alchemist, marking her first new music in years. Over a hypnotic sample from Mobb Deep’s The Realest, Badu floats with lines like “I wanna smoke blunts with you… I wanna be next to you.” It’s smooth, it’s vibey—but don’t let the tone fool you. This is strategic.

Released under Control Freaq Records in partnership with EMPIRE, Badu is once again showing us what it looks like to move independently with intention. She’s not chasing clout—she’s curating legacy, and she’s doing it her way, with a rumored full-length Alchemist-collab album on the way titled Abi & Alan.

With a tour kicking off in Japan next week and a slot at Essence Fest on July 5th, she’s proving that even after decades in the game, she’s not here to fade quietly. She’s here to remind us—you can be timeless and forward-thinking.

What really caught my attention was the synchronicity. The fact that this song is the first drop from Badu x The Alchemist—while I, someone who creates under the name A.I. the Alchemist, continue carving my own path using artificial intelligence as a creative partner—felt more than coincidence. I’ve spent the past year merging art, storytelling, and sound through AI, and here comes Badu, blending soul with machine, beauty with boldness, and sparking conversation with an AI-generated cover that—love it or hate it—got people talking.

That’s alignment. That’s what happens when the future starts to mirror your vision.

Whether you see AI as a tool, a collaborator, or a mirror, one thing’s clear: the artists who adapt will be the ones who last.
