From UGK to His Own Lane: Smoke D Returns to Bosstalk 101

Southern rap legend Smoke D is no stranger to hip-hop history. His name is etched into the legacy of UGK, standing alongside the late great Pimp C, with whom he once lived, learned production, and co-created the UGK classic Front Back. Many fans may not realize that while serving a prison sentence for manslaughter, Smoke D still found a way to contribute—recording interludes from behind bars that ended up on UGK’s Ridin’ Dirty, a platinum album that cemented the Port Arthur duo’s legendary status. Those interludes gave Smoke D a cult following inside and outside of prison walls, proving his voice carried weight even when he was locked away.

Sitting down with E CEO and Mz Jamaica on Bosstalk 101, Smoke D didn’t shy away from revisiting his past with Pimp C and Bun B, or the politics of Southern hip-hop that UGK fought against. E CEO, a die-hard Pimp C fan, leaned in as Smoke D revealed untold stories—like Pimp C’s personal love for “Diamonds & Wood”—and recalled UGK’s ties with No Limit Records. Yet Smoke D is more than just the history; he’s a man sharpened by lessons. Reflecting on both triumphs and missteps, he often resorts to the blunt reminder: “I was high.” But those words don’t come from a man chasing excuses—they come from someone who owns his past with no regrets.

When asked what’s in his car stereo, Smoke D replied simply: “Instrumental beats.” For him, solitude and wordless sound clear the space for his mind to process. In another moment, he broke down how the industry has flipped, from the days when he once pocketed $10,000 a verse to now, when artists often pay for opportunities. “I’m nice, not sweet,” he said, letting it be known he’s capable but now chooses restraint—a clear sign of maturity compared to his wilder days.

Today, Smoke D creates message-driven music with a street perspective, teaching through rhythm rather than just rhymes. His loyalty to UGK is unshaken, but his vision now stands on its own. Upcoming projects include a collaboration album in the style of “Dr. Dre Presents,” revisiting tracks he once wrote or rapped on, a new record with No Limit legend Fiend titled UGK, and an EP, The Lifetime of Freddy Barlow – The American Slave, featuring his wife and carrying heavy messages rooted in the soulful sounds of Southern hip hop.

Smoke D remains a man of wisdom, resilience, and individuality. He takes the good with the bad, offering testimony from both, and he does it with a unique voice that still belongs to Southern hip-hop.
