YG Detained as Police Search Property in Drakeo the Ruler Murder Investigation Hours Before The Game VERZUZ
OK, Yall so as we all know, this last VERZUZ was one for the book as we watched POUND FOR POUND YG VERZUZ THE GAME. Another memorable battle with banger after the next. West Coast gangster and club hits however this is not how YG day start off. So let’s get into it.

The morning of the VERZUZ
On Thursday, July 23, 2026—the same day YG was scheduled to face The Game in the “Compton Forever” VERZUZ—California Highway Patrol investigators and Burbank Police SWAT served a homicide-related search warrant at a property associated with YG.
The operation happened around 6:30–7:00 a.m. in the 400 block of Moss Street in Burbank. Reports differ on whether the building is owned by YG or simply affiliated with him, but local reporting describes it as a commercial property—not necessarily his personal residence.
YG, whose legal name is Keenon Daequan Ray Jackson, was present.

Officers detained him while they conducted the search, which is standard during the execution of a serious search warrant. He was released once the search was complete.
What did not happen:
YG was not arrested.
YG was not booked.
YG was not charged with murder.
Authorities have not publicly announced what evidence they recovered.
No one has been arrested for Drakeo’s murder.
CHP confirmed that the warrant was connected to its continuing investigation into the December 2021 killing of Drakeo the Ruler. Sources reported that authorities said YG had not been named a suspect or person of interest. The Los Angeles Times, however, received a more guarded response from CHP: the agency would not discuss YG’s status because the investigation remains open.
Why did investigators search a property connected to YG?
Authorities have not disclosed the warrant affidavit, the probable cause used to obtain it, or exactly what they were seeking.
However, a major development recently emerged from the civil litigation surrounding Drakeo’s death.
Former Drakeo security guard Alrick Cooper III testified under oath in a March 19, 2025 deposition that YG was allegedly “front and center” during the backstage confrontation.
According to deposition excerpts obtained by the Los Angeles Times, Cooper alleged:
Drakeo’s group was confronted by approximately 20–25 people backstage.
Some members of the opposing group wore red clothing, hoodies and ski masks.
The group allegedly surrounded Drakeo’s party near the artists’ entrance.
Cooper identified YG as the only person he personally recognized.
Cooper claimed he recognized YG by his hazel eyes despite an alleged ski mask.
Cooper alleged that YG produced a short blade from his sleeve and made a slashing motion toward him.
He claimed two other men near YG appeared to possess similar weapons.
Cooper said the group eventually swarmed Drakeo.
Those are serious allegations—but they remain the testimony of one witness in a civil case. They have not been proven in criminal court, YG has not been charged, and Cooper did not reportedly testify that he saw YG deliver the fatal wound. YG is also not named as a defendant in the family’s civil lawsuit.
What happened to Drakeo the Ruler?

Drakeo—born Darrell Wayne Caldwell Jr.—was scheduled to perform at the Once Upon a Time in L.A. festival at Banc of California Stadium on December 18, 2021.
Before his performance, a violent confrontation erupted in a restricted backstage area. Drakeo suffered a fatal stab wound to the neck. Paramedics responded at approximately 8:40 p.m. and transported him to the hospital in critical condition. He died on December 19, shortly after his 28th birthday.
The festival was shut down before later performances by artists including Snoop Dogg and 50 Cent.
Drakeo’s family has claimed that dozens of people overwhelmed his comparatively small entourage and that event security failed to intervene or provide an escape route. Their wrongful-death litigation has targeted Live Nation, C3 Presents, Bobby Dee Presents and security-related entities over alleged failures to protect him.
Why has YG’s name been connected to the case?
YG and Drakeo reportedly had an ongoing public dispute before Drakeo’s death. The family’s lawsuit referenced that feud but initially acknowledged there was no evidence demonstrating that YG was responsible for what happened.
The newly public deposition is significant because it contains a direct eyewitness allegation placing YG inside the confrontation and allegedly holding a weapon.
YG has repeatedly denied being involved in Drakeo’s killing. In his June 2026 song “We Know the Truth,” he rejected the allegations and maintained that he only learned someone had been stabbed after arriving at the festival.
Again, that denial and the security guard’s allegations directly conflict. That is precisely why this must be reported as an unresolved investigation—not a solved murder case.
Was the raid intentionally timed for the VERZUZ?
There is currently no verified evidence that authorities deliberately chose VERZUZ day to embarrass YG, promote the event or prevent him from performing.
The timing was extraordinary:
Search began around 6:30–7:00 a.m.
YG was detained and released that morning.
VERZUZ confirmed the event would proceed.
YG faced The Game that evening at approximately 6:30 p.m.
The simplest responsible conclusion is that the timing may have been coincidental—or investigators may have known where YG would be that morning. Until the warrant documents become public, anything stronger is speculation.
Despite the SWAT operation, YG appeared for the battle that night.
